BetterStories launched today the Bangladesh Climate Innovation Center in partnership with the World Bank Group and with support from the government of the United Kingdom. The business hub will help local start-ups develop and scale innovative clean technologies that can help address climate change issues and spur green growth.
The center aims to support about 20 companies per year by offering a customized suite of business-support services, including coaching, training, market linkages, and investment facilitation.
“The Bangladesh Climate Innovation Center will play a catalytic role in developing and promoting innovative clean-tech products and services,” said Ganesh Rasagam, Practice Manager for the Finance, and Competitiveness & Innovation Global Practice at the World Bank Group. “By helping local entrepreneurs and start-ups validate, refine, and scale their green business models, the center can contribute to building the country’s climate resilience, while also creating jobs and supporting economic growth.”
Addressing climate change is an important priority in Bangladesh. The country is extremely vulnerable to tropical cyclones and, each year, it experiences about two-fifths of the world’s storm surges. Scarcity of fresh water, salt-water intrusion from sea level, and frequent floods are also critical challenges facing the country.
The private sector can complement public efforts to identify climate adaptation and mitigation solutions by developing and bringing to market innovative green products and services that provide access to potable water and clean energy, enable climate-smart agriculture, and promote sustainable transportation.
“Through this collaboration, we are here to identify and support individuals or entities who are passionate and have the drive to rise above the challenge,” said Minhaz Anwar, Chief Storyteller at BetterStories. “Responding to climate change takes a collective effort both from the public and private sectors. The Bangladesh Climate Innovation Center will ensure a platform that will allow Bangladesh to become more climate resilient.”
Hosted by BetterStories, the development of the Bangladesh Climate Innovation Center was supported by the World Bank Group with the financial support of UK aid from the UK government.
